Laid back Garden Route Tour

DAY 1

Cape Town

We start the laid back Garden Route tour with a trip down to the Cape Point Nature Reserve. We follow the Atlantic coastline, via Chapman’s Peak Drive (weather dependant) and into the Cape Point National Park. Most of the day is spent at the reserve, admiring the views of False Bay, the fauna and flora, visiting the old lighthouse, walking to the new lighthouse and doing the cliff hugging walk down to Cape of Good Hope where you guide will meet you. We the make our way back up the False Bay coastline and over Boyes Drive for some superb views over the False Bay coastline, returning to Cape Town in the late afternoon. (Approx 130km).

DAY 2

Cape Town - Robertson

After breakfast we bid farewell to Cape Town and head north for a picture postcard view of Table Mountain before turning inland to explore the winding passes and stunning scenery of the Cape winelands. In the late morning we find ourselves at the Slanghoek Winery where we taste the wide variety of wines, sparkling wines and natural sweet wines. Lunch can be either a picnic or a sit down meal at a nearby restaurant. In the afternoon, we make our way via the back roads to Robertson where we overnight. Enjoy a wine tasting before dinner on a working wine farm. (Approx 280km).

DAY 3

Robertson - Oudtshoorn

Our journey takes us along the R62 (longest wine route in the world), and the first town we come to is Ashton, where there is a wine co-op where you can buy a variety of wines from the surrounding farms and do some tasting (if its not too early). We follow the R62 through a variety of beautiful but different landscapes and into the Little Karoo. We pass through many small towns where there are ample opportunities for short stops. On the outskirts of our overnight stop is the ostrich farm where we do a tour. We arrive in Oudtshoorn (Ostrich capitol of South Africa), in the early afternoon, and proceed to the Cango Caves and then return to our guesthouse. (Approx 330km).

DAY 4

Oudtshoorn - Plettenberg Bay

In the morning we visit the Cango Wildlife Ranch (optional extras: cheetah encounter and crocodile cage diving ). We then head south for the coast, crossing over the Outeniqua Mountain Range but instead take the old Montagu Pass to George. As we exit George we take another detour and follow the original road to Knysna: the 7 Passes Route which winds around the mountain side, passing through tree enclosed roads and down to Knysna. We pass through the town towards our guesthouse at the mouth of the lagoon in Plettenberg Bay. After checking in and freshening up we head for the dinner at a local restaurant. (Approx 150km).

DAY 5

Plettenberg Bay

Today there are various optional activities to do: Knysna Elephant Park (Knysna), Birds of Eden, Monkeyland, Treetop Canopy tours, Tsitsikamma Adventures zipline tours, helicopter rides, boat based whale watching, sea kayak tours and bungee jumping (world’s highest bungee jump at 216m). We return to our guesthouse to freshen up before going to dinner at a local restaurant (Approx 180km).

DAY 6

Plettenberg Bay - Addo Elephant Park

A different and scenic route awaits us today. We travel over the Prince Alfred's Pass to Die Vlug, Uniondale and Willowmore on the way to the Addo Elephant Park. Once we arrive, we check into our accommodation before going on a late afternoon game drive. Your guide will prepare your dinner for you while you are enjoying the game. What to see at the park: Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Hyena, flightless dung beetle, zebra, kudu, red hartebeest, warthog and many more.

DAY 7

Addo Elephant Park

The day is spent at leisure in the Addo Elephant Park. You can do the optional horse back rides, relax and watch the game at the waterhole or do a morning and evening game drive.

DAY 8

Addo Elephant Park - Knysna

If you want to see the animals, you need to get up early for the game drive. Coffee and rusks will be ready before you depart. After you return from your 2 hour game drive, breakfast will be ready. After breakfast, its time to leave the reserve and start making our way back to Cape Town. We travel via Uitenhage (the 'Detroit' of South Africa) and then follow the coastline all the way back to Knysna. We arrive in the late afternoon, check into the guest house, freshen up and make our way to the waterfront for an evening cruise on the estuary followed by dinner at one of the local restaurants. (Approx 390km).

DAY 9

Knysna - Cape Agulhas

After breakfast, we travel  back along the N2 through South Africa's version of the 'lakes district' passing the towns of Sedgefield and Wilderness along the way. At Albertinia we stop at the Aloe Ferox shop for a tour and the chance to purchase some of the products they make from the Aloe plant. Lunch is at the old gaol in Riversdale where there is a chance to do some shopping. We continue to Cape Agulhas, by passing over the Breede River on the last man operated pont in South Africa. Once at the southern tip of Africa, we head for the guest house and relax till dinner.  (Approx 459km).

DAY 10

Cape Agulhas - Cape Town

After watching the sunrise over 2 oceans simultaneously, breakfast is served. We take a trip to the lighthouse so you can walk up to the top. We then depart the southern tip of Africa, passing through Elim; an old mission village that has not changed much from when it was founded and make our way down to the False Bay coastline. We follow the coastline through Hermanus and this road is then known as Clarence Drive: one of the most scenic coastal roads in the country as you can see Cape Point on the far side of the bay on a clear day. Once we get to Gordon's Bay, we make our way to the winelands for one last tasting and lunch and then follow the road back to Cape Town arriving in the late afternoon. (Approx 360km)
